“Narrative Medicine as Bridge to Psychologically-informed Health Care”
Narrative medicine practices lead us into a world of language, lived experience and access to the human side of illness experience. Chronic disease management requires different interactions with the health care system, where professionals have a sense of the impact that disease management has on that person's life. Using the example of chronic pain, this talk will show the way that narrative medicine is a natural path towards development of psychologically-informed clinical practice. A case study will be used to show the way that psychologically-informed practices can reduce disability and distress, and clear a path to effective pain self-management.
